Global Warming, Where Did You Go?

Posted on: Mon, 2007-02-05 09:59 | By: matt | In:

This morning I stepped outside and proceeded to freeze. I knew it was cold but had no idea how cold. On the drive into work I listened to the school closings. Virtually every school in Metro Detroit is closed. Then, on the radio, they read the temperature. -4 degrees with the wind chill into the negative twenties.

According to weather.com today we had a record low for February 5th. The weather reports expect a high temperature in the low teens. It's cold outside.

After hearing all of this I am left wondering, where is global warming at? Where is all that talk that Michigan winters are going away? Because, I step outside and don't feel it.

What happened to Florida weather coming to me in Michigan?

#1 Make a trip over to

Make a trip over to Australia and believe me you will have no trouble believing that global warming is around.

#2 warming

I don't doubt that the Earth is overall warming up. Though, that is a whole series worth of blog posts to describe what I really think. But, I think my brain is too cold to do that at the moment. It's -2 degrees and -18 with wind chill here as I type this.

#3 your global warming comment

Matt, regarding your quote on Cranach comments about global warming, you said the following:

"I recently read (not going to go grab the source) that if all gasoline use in the US stopped it would have a less than 1% change in the rate of the air getting cleaner, which it already is doing. Saying this warming is actually a problem (and the jury is still out on that) means that we need a solution from God. This solution would require countries that are doing terrible things to the environment (3rd world countries) to stop. It would, also, involve the Earths cycle of warming and cooling to change among other things."

Matt, since you are good at not believing everything you read, you might start with not believing the whatever you read that led you to write the above paragraph.

You might also recognize that in terms of "air getting cleaner" (depends where you are), car emissions are a very large portion of air pollution. Also, car emissions are heavily regulated --those regulations reduced car emissions significantly.

Do you think smog checks, requirements for engines, requirements for gas mileage have anything to do with improving air quality?

Food for thought.

#4 regulations

Thanks for your comment. I am glad to know that there are people who care a lot about the environment. It's Gods creation and we are to be good stewards of that.

I am fairly sure, reading what I wrote again and seeing what you are writing, that I wasn't very clear with what I meant. When I wrote about us stopping using gasoline and the impact that would have I was comparing it to what we have now, with all the regulations, and not using any gasoline products at all.

I do think the regulations have had an impact on air quality. Evidence has been collected that shows that the air is getting cleaner in the US every year and has since more of cars have gotten on the road that don't dirty up the air. The more the older cars get off the road and people by new ones the faster the air will get cleaner.

The sad part in this is that this is just the US and a few other countries who have made leaps and bounds in air quality. There are many countries like China, India, and 3rd world countries that are doing terrible things to the environment and don't care about clean air or clean Earth.

But, I don't think that global warming is the reason we should try to be good stewards to the Earth, take care of it, work on clean fuels, push regulations to motivate innovation, or even recycle. We should do it because God commanded us to take care of the Earth and Jesus reminded us that we can show Him that we love Him by following His commands. No other reason is greater or more worthy.

Is global warming bad for the Earth? The jury is out on that but global warming doesn't really matter. Whether the Earth is warming or cooling we should be good stewards and take care of it.

Am I for the environment? Totally. Do I give two hoots about global warming? Nope. It doesn't make a difference.
